Wearing the Remainders of the Dead

When Mr. Law died, I was given his sweaters.

I wore them frequently to school, although

they were much too large for me

He had a little house in his backyard that he called

“Little Mount Vernon”, where his collection of clocks

and toys and gadgets were.  This is where he spent time.

He bought a Volkswagen in 1949, one of the first

in the United States.  It was his ultimate gadget.

After a while, none of the gears would turn.

He could not repair his clocks and toys, that was

not something he did, so they all slowly wound down

and fell apart in little increments over his life.

Mount Vernon was the Palladian style home of

George and Martha Washington.  It was made of wood

and was named after a Vice Admiral of the British Royal Navy

It began falling apart in 1799.
