Dog Walk

The sidewalk is buckled where the Maple tree
Urged under it, invisible roots in the dark.
The dog will not step on the cracks
She walks in the grass and increases her pace

She is above the Earth and trees
For her everything is a portion of scent
She ignores trees as she ignores most smells
They are ordinary and expected

But the open fissures in concrete are
Different, new, and require reaction.
Nose down, she smells the ground near the
Path for clues to this upset.
Like me, she is confounded by things that
She is not equipped to solve.
