Covalent

Here is a model for students of chemistry,

Interested in bonding.

Old school sticks and balls are in a drawer, somewhere.

These plastic orbs are deformable

You can pretend they spin, have poles,

Fields of electromagnetic potential that

Extend like blonde hair in a gust of wind

When we were in college and walked to the dorm

And I stopped at the street corner just as it

Started snowing and kissed you.

Your coat fell open and I was inside, soft heat

Slipping with me into the night sky.

Not binary,

There are stages of excitement, energy levels, but

Not analog, more like discrete steps, and if you

Miss one then the bond fails, the parts fly apart

At dazzling speed, the center ionizes and becomes virulent;

Wanders off with a grudge and an unfilled heart.

The distance between molecules is three nanometers, and

Air, like the heart, is overwhelmingly empty space.
