They found a human bone when
digging a trench for the new sewer line
They would have ignored it, it looked like a pig rib
But the state inspector was there and wanted to inspect it
There were no other bones nearby, not even deeper in the Earth
But there was a small heart carved from Walnut, with a
Wooden chain, also carved, with a broken link.
The County Coroner identified it as a human clavicle
It was not unusual or important, probably a drifter,
Or a Native American, or a Civil War soldier
Dating the bone or the wood was expensive, and
Everyone was busy.
The clavicle and the heart are together in a little box with a piece of paper
Describing where and when they were found. They went into storage.
The clavicle is the most frequently broken bone in the human body
I asked if single bones were a common find
Yes, the excavation for roads and buildings and utilities
Sometimes scatters remains for hundreds of yards
I forgot to ask about the wooden heart.
