There were no trees for a long time
The bacteria crawled into mitochondria
and waited
They were eventually put to work
sweeping, making small fires, editing
Everything was promiscuous and horizontal
the fragments of lush code were everywhere
The first tree was simple and made blood
from which the first people made dragons
They could not see any dragons, not really,
but they had no regard for the real world
And all the dragons invented a world
where we ached for love and stabbed
at the heart of immovable trees.
