The Other Watch

You stopped sleeping a long time ago
Uninterrupted
By the little gaps between day and night

I haven’t been very good about paying attention
To your catastrophe,
While it unfolded
I wanted to be elsewhere, not sleeping all the time

Just once I would like to be inseparable
From some body
Synchronized like actual gears
Jewel bearings that will not wear

I could hold you in my hand
Feel the difference in our heat
Your monogram slowly wearing away
Precious gold such a soft metal

I am afraid
You have all the time there is
And you have just enough time
And a speck of dust might stop you
in a terrible instant.
